How To Offset Your Demolition Costs Article

How to Offset the Costs on Your Demolition Project – Maximize Scrap Metal and Salvage

In order to keep your demolition costs to a minimum, clients need to maximize the return on scrap metal recycling and salvage of equipment and parts.  By doing this, clients with large demolition and wrecking projects can see a substantial offset on demolition costs.  In some cases, clients can get paid if there is enough scrap metals and used equipment sale.

Universal Wrecking Corp. is a demolition and salvage company that is an expert in demolition, scrap metal recycling and equipment salvage.  On a nationwide basis, Universal Wrecking Corp. (UWC) has demolished numerous industrial and commercial plants, facilities, warehouses and other structures and maximized recycling and salvage.  UWC offsets the costs of demolition to its clients through:

• Recycling of non-ferrous and ferrous scrap metals

• Salvage and sale of used equipment, parts, materials, etc.

• Recycling of concrete

• Recycling of wood timbers and beams

Through maximizing of recycling efforts, UWC has provided substantial credits towards the demolition of structures.  On large projects, where there is enough scrap metals and equipment, UWC has actually paid the client for the project.

Please contact UWC for an estimate, proposal or firm bid (see contact information below).

Demolition and Construction Safety Tips - Fall Prevention

As per OSHA, demolition work involves many of the same hazards that arise during other construction activities. However, demolition also involves additional hazards due to a variety of other factors. Some of these include: lead-based paint, sharp or protruding objects, asbestos-containing material and fall hazards.  This document will focus on preventing falls.

Prevent Falls
  • Brace or shore up the walls and floors of structures which have been damaged and which employees must enter.
  • Inspect personal protective equipment (PPE) before use.
  • Select, wear and use appropriate PPE for the task.
  • Inspect all stairs, passageways, and ladders; illuminate all stairways.
  • Shut off or cap all electric, gas, water, steam, sewer, and other service lines; notify appropriate utility companies.
  • Guard wall openings to a height of 42 inches; cover and secure floor openings with material able to withstand the loads likely to be imposed.
  • Floor openings used for material disposal must not be more than 25% of the total floor area.
  • Use enclosed chutes with gates on the discharge end to drop demolition material to the ground or into debris containers.
  • Demolition of exterior walls and floors must begin at the top of the structure and proceed downward.
  • Structural or load-supporting members on any floor must not be cut or removed until all stories above that floor have been removed.
  • All roof cornices or other ornamental stonework must be removed prior to pulling walls down.
  • Employees must not be permitted to work where structural collapse hazards exist until they are corrected by shoring, bracing, or other effective means.

NATIONAL DEMOLITION ASSOCIATION 2011 CONVENTION March 5 - 8

NATIONAL DEMOLITION ASSOCIATION’S “DEMOLITION ACADEMY” AT 2011 CONVENTION

The National Demolition Association’s safety and management training event, Demolition Academy, takes place March 5-6, 2011 in the opening days of the NDA’s Annual Convention in Las Vegas. Sessions cover OSHA 10-hour certification and topics such as industrial hygiene and disaster response.

The National Demolition Association’s respected Demolition Academy – an intensive safety and management training event – will take place March 5-6, 2011 in Las Vegas, right before the opening of the National Demolition Association’s 38th Annual Convention at The Mirage. The decision to connect the two events was made to enable participants to take advantage of the convention, which runs March 5-8.

The Demolition Academy begins Saturday March 5 with the Demolition-Specific OSHA 10-Hour Certification. For those already holding their certification, there is concurrent in-depth training in basic industrial hygiene for the demolition industry, fall protection, and developing and utilizing a demolition engineering survey. All sessions conclude at 12:30 p.m.

The Sunday March 6 session provides a continuation of the Demolition-Specific OSHA  Certification of the previous day, or the option of full-day management training workshops in generational communicating, OSHA’s new crane standard, and a session called “When Disaster Strikes.” Again, all courses conclude at 12:30 p.m.

The Demolition-Specific OSHA 10-Hour Training Certification is taught by certified  instructors and is required by many of the industry’s larger clients, according to Michael R. Taylor, CAE, NDA Executive Director. “It should be an important part of every company’s safety training program and is also required as part of OSHA’s Disaster Site Worker Training Certification,” he said, adding that 2011 is the 17th year that the Association has been offering a formal safety training program to the industry.

The National Demolition Association’s Demolition Academy gives participants a selection of options for attending the event. Attendees can sign up for the entire safety/management program or the OSHA 10-hour for a flat fee of $175. They can also pick individual classes for $50 per class. The program includes continental breakfasts and coffee breaks each day. Attendees are also entitled to visit the Convention Exhibit Hall on Sunday afternoon at no extra charge.

For information on a special $229 per night room rate at The Mirage from March 3-11, contact The Mirage at 800-627-6667 and mention the National Demolition Association. More information on the event is available at http://www.demolitionassociation.com/SAFETY/NDAsAnnualDemolitionAcademy/tabid/203/Defa

or by contacting the Association at info@demolitionassociation.com or 800-541-2412.

The National Demolition Association is a non-profit trade organization representing approximately 1,000 U.S. and Canadian companies and many international firms that are involved in the demolition process. Membership includes demolition contractors, general contractors, civil engineering firms, and recycling, landfill, and salvage operations. The association’s efforts help members stay abreast of environmental, regulatory and safety matters, keep regulators informed about issues facing the industry, increase public and industry awareness, and provide members with networking opportunities and information on the latest  technical advances in equipment and services.
