Universal Wrecking Corp Completes First Phase of Plant Demolition

Universal Wrecking Corp (UWC), a diversified demolition, wrecking and scrap metal recycling contractor, was recently awarded the first phase of a large demolition project in the New England Region. The client awarded the project to UWC based upon their engineered cost saving approaches to the project as well as their safety record and proposed schedule.

The first phase of the project included the asbestos abatement and demolition of several dilapidated buildings. The buildings were constructed of wood structural beams, wood floors and roofs and brick and stone walls. The buildings were 70 years plus old and had significant water damage and cracked beams making the structures unstable.

Prior to any demolition or abatement activities, several tasks needed to be completed. Utilities were confirmed to be disconnected and all permits were obtained.

To properly remove asbestos materials from a structurally unsafe building, UWC worked very closely with their asbestos subcontractor to remove all ACM via wet methods. Variances and permits were obtained to make sure the abatement and demolition was conducted properly. The removed asbestos materials were properly wetted and directly loaded into lined waste containers for offsite disposal.

Once the asbestos containing materials had been removed, demolition activities commenced. Making the project a bit unique was the fact that the buildings were situated with 10 feet of an active railroad line. Demolition had to be conducted in a careful, methodical manner in order to not damage the rail line or nearby railcars.

UWC utilized the following heavy equipment to demolish the structures:

• A Cat 330L Excavator with a hydraulic hammer attachment
• A Cat 330 Excavator with LaBounty Grapple attachment
• A Cat 350 Excavator with LaBounty MSD 100 Shear attachment
• Bobcat 773 Skid Steer with demo grapple
• Bobcat 773 Skid Steer with hammer attachment
• Various support equipment

Support personnel included a total of eight (8) employees consisting of OSHA trained operators and laborers.

UWC made every effort to maximize recycling on this project. Metals were sent offsite to a scrap yard, concrete, brick and block were sent to a recycler and clean wood was separated from debris.

The work was conducted in accordance with all OSHA regulations and was successfully completed on schedule.
